Deception Island and Cape Horn
During the early morning on Dec. 31, the ship navigated a Northeasterly course towards Deception Island under heavily overcast skies. Since the early 1800's, Deception Island was a favorite refuge area from the storms and icebergs of the Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which has caused damage as late as 1967 and 1969. Due to the fog and overcast skies, our visibility was seriously limited; however, one of the most entertaining sights while there were the schools of penguins swimming across the strait! Around 10:00 that morning, the ship sets a northerly track towards Cape Horn and we bid farewell to the incredible continent of Antarctica!
Throughout the morning of Jan. 1, the ship continues on course towards Cape Horn. After our very rough passage (on New Year's Eve celebrated stomachs...), we arrive at the Chilean Fjords and the port of Ushuaia, as we are treated to a remarkable sunset sky!
